英スコットランド・パース出身。16歳で私立学校を退学し、地元の劇団に所属。ロンドンのギルドホール音楽演劇学校で3年間演技を学び、1992年にTVドラマに出演、翌93年に「Being Human（原題）」で映画デビューを飾る。ダニー・ボイル監督作「シャロウ・グレイヴ」（95）で注目を浴び、同監督の「トレインスポッティング」（96）で世界的にブレイク。99年には「スター・ウォーズ ファントム・メナス」で若き日のオビ＝ワン・ケノービ役に抜てきされ、続く「クローンの攻撃」（02）、「シスの復讐」（05）にも出演した。その他の代表作に「ムーラン・ルージュ」（01）、「ビッグ・フィッシュ」（05）、「インポッシブル」（12）、ボイル監督が20年ぶりに続編を手がけた「T2 トレインスポッティング」（17）など。16年には主演作「アメリカン・バーニング」で長編監督デビューを果たした。
