米カリフォルニア州ラホヤ（現サンディエゴ）出身。5歳のとき両親が離婚し、祖母のもとで育つ。カリフォルニア大学在学中に演劇にのめりこみ、ニューヨークの俳優養成学校ネイバーフッド・プレイハウスを卒業後、1942年にブロードウェイデビュー。翌43年にはハリウッドに移り、「炎のロシア戦線」の主演で映画デビューを果たす。 続く「王国の鍵」（44）でアカデミー男優賞に初ノミネートされて一躍スター俳優となり、「仔鹿物語」（46）でゴールデングローブ賞主演男優賞を受賞。反ユダヤ主義を描いた主演作「紳士協定」（47）はアカデミー作品賞を受賞した。 不朽の名作「ローマの休日」（53）では同作が米映画初出演だったオードリー・ヘプバーンと共演し、「アラバマ物語」（62）で5度目のノミネートにしてアカデミー男優賞を初受賞。以降の出演作に「オーメン」（76）、「ブラジルから来た少年」（78）などがある。1967年のアカデミー賞では、映画業界の発展に貢献した人物に贈られるジーン・ハーショルト友愛賞を受賞。また米国大統領自由勲章も受章している。03年、87歳でロサンゼルスにて死去。
