米・ロサンゼルス出身。大学時代に演劇に目覚め、ジーン・ハックマンとともにパサデナ・プレイハウスの演目に参加する。その後、ともにニューヨークへ引越し、アクターズ・スタジオで演技を学ぶ。オフブロードウェイでの活躍が映画監督マイク・ニコルズの目に留まり、「卒業」（67）に抜擢。瞬く間に観客の心をつかみ、映画出演2作目にしてアカデミー主演男優賞にノミネートされた。その後は、オスカー候補になった「真夜中のカーボーイ」（69）、「レニー・ブルース」（74）をはじめ、卓越した演技で数多くの作品に出演する。79年の「クレイマー、クレイマー」でオスカーを勝ち取り、「レインマン」（88）で2度目の受賞を果たした。「トッツィー」（82）、「ウワサの真相 ワグ・ザ・ドッグ」（97）でもノミネートされている。近年は、「ミート・ザ・ペアレンツ」シリーズ（04、10）、「主人公は僕だった」（06）のほか、ドリームワークスのアニメ「カンフー・パンダ」シリーズ（08～）に声優として参加している。
