英ケント州出身。英ロンドンの王立演劇学校（RADA）を卒業し、舞台俳優として活躍。2015年までにローレンス・オリビエ賞を2度、トニー賞を3度受賞する。一方、「ハーツ・オブ・ファイヤー」（87）を皮切りに、「インティマシー 親密」（01）や「ブーリン家の姉妹」（08）、「ブリッツ」「もうひとりのシェイクスピア」（ともに11）などの映画にも出演。スティーブン・スピルバーグ監督の「ブリッジ・オブ・スパイ」（15）でアカデミー助演男優賞に初ノミネートされて受賞を果たし、主演を務めた歴史ドラマ「ウルフ・ホール」（15）でも高い評価を得た。スピルバーグ監督がロアルド・ダールの名作児童書を映画化した「BFG ビッグ・フレンドリー・ジャイアント」（16）にも主演。以降もスピルバーグ監督の「レディ・プレイヤー1」（18）をはじめ、「シカゴ7裁判」（20）、「ドント・ルック・アップ」（21）など多数の作品で活躍している。
