イギリス・ノースヨークシャー出身。マンチェスターのアマチュア劇団での活動を経て、23歳でプロの舞台役者としてデビュー。67年にロンドンへ移り、ロイヤル・シェイクスピア・カンパニーなどに所属し活躍する。71年にはブロードウェイでの初舞台を踏んだ。伝記映画「ガンジー」（82）でインドの独立運動の指導者であるマハトマ・ガンジーを演じ、アカデミー主演男優賞をはじめ数多くの賞を受賞し、映画界でも大きな注目を集める。スティーブン・スピルバーグ監督作「シンドラーのリスト」（93）では、ユダヤ人の会計士を演じた。「バグジー」（91）、「セクシー・ビースト」（00・日本劇場未公開）、「砂と霧の家」（03）でもアカデミー賞にノミネートされた。
