大学中退後、41年にRKOに下働きとして入社。チャップリンやルノワールの助監督を経て、53年「The Big Leaguer」で監督デビュー。アクション、サスペンス、業界のバックステージものなど、骨太でエネルギッシュ、そして反骨精神あふれる野心作を作り続ける。赤狩りで不遇の時を送ったこともあったが、「攻撃」がベネチア国際映画祭批評家賞を受賞するなど、その作品は世界中から支持された。83年12月5日に腎臓病のために死去した。
