ニューヨーク出身。カーネギーメロン大学を卒業後に短編映画を撮影しはじめ、友人たちと立ち上げた製作会社で低予算の白黒映画「ナイト・オブ・ザ・リビングデッド ゾンビの誕生」（68）を製作。同作はカルト的な人気を得て、後年「ゾンビ」という存在や「ゾンビ映画」ジャンルの創始として語り継がれる古典作品となる。「悪魔の儀式」（72）や「ザ・クレイジーズ」（73）などのホラー映画を経て、特殊メイクアーティストのトム・サビーニと初タッグを組んだ傑作ホラー「ゾンビ」（78）は世界的に大ヒット。エド・ハリス主演「ナイトライダーズ」（81）やスティーブン・キング原作「クリープショー」（82）などを手がけ、85年にはゾンビ映画第3弾「死霊のえじき」を発表する。その後は興行成績の低迷などもあったが、2005年に約20年ぶりとなる新たなゾンビ映画「ランド・オブ・ザ・デッド」を送り出し、「ダイアリー・オブ・ザ・デッド」（07）、「サバイバル・オブ・ザ・デッド」（09）と続いたが、17年に肺がんのため77歳で逝去。「サバイバル・オブ・ザ・デッド」が遺作となった。
