南カリフォルニア大学スクール・オブ・シネマティック・アーツ在学中に脚本家として参加した「The Resurrection of Bronco Billy（原題）」（70）がアカデミー短編実写賞を受賞。学友ダン・オバノン（「エイリアン」脚本）と共同で脚本を執筆した「ダーク・スター」（74）で監督デビューを果たす。78年の「ハロウィン」が製作費30万ドルの低予算にもかかわらず、世界興収7500万ドルを超えるヒットを記録。第2弾では脚本を、第3弾では製作を担当した。「マウス・オブ・マッドネス」（94）や「エスケープ・フロム・L.A.」（96）、「ヴァンパイア 最期の聖戦」（98）などSF・ホラー作品でカルト的な人気を誇る。「ザ・ウォード 監禁病棟」（11）で、「ゴースト・オブ・マーズ」（01）以来約10年ぶりに長編劇場映画のメガホンをとった。ほとんどの作品で自ら作曲も手がけている。「ザ・フォッグ」（80）に出演したエイドリアン・バーボーと79年に結婚するが84年に離婚した
