父親はウォール街で成功を収めた株式仲買人。イェール大学を1年で退学後、ベトナム戦争で兵役に就く。退役後、ニューヨーク大学でマーティン・スコセッシに師事。74年に「邪悪の女王」（日本劇場未公開）で監督デビューを果たすが、アカデミー脚色賞を受賞した「ミッドナイト・エクスプレス」（78）や「コナン・ザ・グレート」（82）、「スカーフェイス」（83）などで脚本家として頭角を現す。その後、ベトナム戦争を題材にした「プラトーン」（86）でアカデミー作品賞・監督賞受賞し、監督としても才能を開花させた。以降、「ウォール街」（87）、「7月4日に生まれて」（89）、「JFK」（91）、「天と地」（93）といった社会派の作品を監督し、地位を築く。90年代後半からは、映画プロデューサーやドキュメンタリー番組の監督としても手腕を発揮。9・11全米同時多発テロ後は、「ワールド・トレード・センター」（06）、「ブッシュ」（08）といった作品を発表した。中南米の指導者たちに強い関心を寄せていることでも知られる。その他の監督作に、クエンティン・タランティーノが脚本を書いた「ナチュラル・ボーン・キラーズ」（94）、「ウォール街」の続編「ウォール・ストリート」（10）など。
