米アイオワ州出身。8歳の時からCMやTVで活躍し、バリー・レビンソン監督の「わが心のボルチモア」（90）で映画デビューする。 「フォーエヴァー・ヤング」「危険な遊び」（ともに93）、「8月のメモワール」（95）などで演技の腕を磨き、「ディープ・インパクト」（97）を皮切りに主演俳優としても活躍。ロバート・ロドリゲス監督のSFホラー「パラサイト」（98）を経て、ファンタジー超大作「ロード・オブ・ザ・リング」3部作（01、02、03）の主人公フロド役を務め、世界で最も知られた顔の一人となる。 以降の出演作に「エターナル・サンシャイン」（04）、 「シン・シティ」（05）、フロド役で再登場した「ホビット 思いがけない冒険」（12）など。14年頃からはプロデューサーとしても活躍し、「ザ・ボーイ 鹿になった少年」（15）や「ダニエル」（18）などで製作に名を連ねている。
